Sciphone Dream G2 Video Shows Off Faux Android Interface…

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, this is still Sciphone straight jacking Android. Did no-one tell them that Google’s platform was open source, freely available to use on their Dream G2 handset…for free? All that effort, all that reverse engineering, for nought!

Sad.

Anyway, the phone doesn’t look half bad.

It looks all bad.

Android On Sony PSP! Wait, What?

androidpsp

It would have made far more sense (although been a lot more difficult) to do this on the touch-driven Nintendo DS, but a user on the PSP ITA forums called User Manual has managed to get a shell of Android running on the Playstation Portable!

It lacks a lot of functionality, being a beta and all, but it is still pretty impressive! Right now, the following is up and running:-

  • USB
  • Games
  • Photos
  • Info
  • Settings
  • Contacts
  • Calculator

Wow. Now you too can make your expensive portable gaming device slightly more powerful than a Nokia 3210. You want to do so? Go ahead and download the Android for PSP stuff here.

“Where’s My T-Mobile G1 Cupcake Update?” : The Definitive Answer!

dracula_cupcake_monster-722393

Well, Google only have themselves to blame. They shot their mouth off about how the T-Mobile G1 update (nicknamed ‘Cupcake’) would allow Android phone owners to enjoy a wealth of new features, special powers and years of clear skies and enjoyable mobile phone usage. But it still isn’t out yet, and the troops are getting restless.

They set up an Official Cupcake Thread to allay everyone’s fears that Cupcake wasn’t a cruel hoax and would prove the quantum of solace that G1 owners without a virtual keyboard would need. Obviously this thread descended into chaos and anarchy and had to be locked, as is the case with all rabid fanboy threads.

So now they have set up another thread (amusingly titled Cupcake Thread of DOOM™!), to field all questions and queries surrounding Cupcake’s sweet imminent release. The result? Almost no relevant info, but lots of pictures of cupcakes! At least they are keeping themselves occupied in anticipation of the inevitable release of the new firmware update…

Yes, I did use the term ‘quantum of solace,’ contextually correctly and without a hint of irony.

UPDATE: Word has it from the GoogleAndBlog that the Cupcake update could be giving some Over-The-Air loving to T-Mobile G1 handsets any time from mid-January! As soon as this weekend, we could be revelling in Android glory! Fingers crossed, folks!

Forgotten why Cupcake will change your life? See below for the full list of revisions! Not got a G1 yet? Check out our new T-Mobile G1 deals page here!

Will HTC’s G1 Android Phone Ever See An India Release Date?

n509911928_1966604_6847-1

Having been to India myself lately, one thing they are not playing around with is mobile phones. With movie megastar Aamit Khan plugging the Samsung Omnia and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 being plastered all over Mumbai International Airport, their mobile phone industry has expanded far beyond clockwork Nokias with monochrome screens in the East…for the rich.

With smartphones priced way out of reach of many in India, industry commentators were looking to see a version of the Android-powered HTC Dream phone being released in this territory late in 2008 as an entry level alternative.  Well, we are now into 2009, and still no nearer to seeing the G1 having a concrete release date over there.

Reports say HTC are in advanced talks with a leading service provider and would prefer to introduce the HTC G1 Android phone in India through a close association with a single network, as they have done with T-Mobile in the US and Europe.

The HTC G1 Android phone is rumoured to be released at a cost of over 20,000 Rupees, far higher than the launch price overseas, but lower than astronomical 31,000 Rupees (£420!) they are charging for an 8GB Apple iPhone.

Perhaps there will be a cheap and cheerful resolution to the Android smartphone stalemate in India in the form of the Kogan Pro…we’ll wait and see.

Oh, the picture? That’s me (on the left) touching an elephant in Kerala. Any other questions? Didn’t think so.
