It’s (HTC) Magic

htc-magic

Excuse my Paul Daniel’s reference but how often do you get to mention a 1980’s magicians in a mobile phone blog? Answers on a post card.

Any hoo, the Omio guys are currently attending the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona and are reporting on the cool stuff they see there. Check out the blog to get all the latest news.

The latest Android powered smartphone to be announced is the HTC Magic. The HTC Magic will be available from spring 2009, so not much longer to wait. Although it is the second Android powered handset, it is no G2, more like G1.5 as it includes all the features from the original G1 but with some refinements including a 3.2 inch QVGA touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, MP3 player and scrolling trackball. However the biggest difference between the original Android device and HTC Magic is the UI. The HTC Magic includes many more Google powered applications such as Maps and search as well giving access to Vodafone specific services.

What is lacks from the original G1 is the slide out QWERTY keyboard, replaced by a virtual and the 3.5mm headphone jack replaced by a multi-purpose HTC ExtUSB port.

Android Cupcake – YouTube Favourites

htc-magic1

The drip drip of information regarding the Cupcake is rather like Chinese water torture or sadistic foreplay. We can’t show you everything but take a peek at this. So it is, that today there is another tantalising glance of Cupcake. Mobile Crunch spotted a YouTube Favourites folder on the HTC Magic. Access your favourite YouTube videos from the home screen fantastic, excellent means I can listen to Flock of Seagulls I Ran, without all that tedious typing into YouTube’s search bar.

Samsung Android Phone Delayed

Samsung handset running Google Android? Not in the first half of 2009! The Korean mobile phone maker is reported to have hit some snags in development, and the announcement will no longer be made at next week’s MWC.

The mystery handset has now been earmarked for launch in the second half of the year.

With Samsung planning to focus more on the touchscreen area of the market in 2009, they are certainly hedging their bets on this sector between this and the forthcoming Samsung Tocco Ultra.

Low or high-end, people want iPhone-y phones, and Samsung are only too happy to accommodate. Just not yet.

G1 News Is Not Dead (Again)!

But it is a bit broken though. Which is why we are back to the gorgeous default Wordpress set-up.

I am equally as likely to teach a bear to shoot a gun as handle CSS and Javascript architecture, so please remain calm and normal service shall be resumed shortly.

In the meantime, enjoy our new posts and try not to look at the borkedness!

HTC Dream Becomes Reality In Australia And Asia!

HTC has announced the new Dream, an HTC-branded version of T-Mobile G1, the original code name for the first Android handset for those with longer memories! The HTC Dream will be targeted at Asia and Australia exclusively, becoming the second Android handset to market (sort of), and the first to be released on that side of the world!

In an obvious attempt to stay out of the way of T-Mobile G1, HTC are releasing their Android-powered HTC Dream only in Asia and Australia. SingTel and Optus will be the first networks to get their mitts on the original Android device.

Specswise it’s all we’ve come to know and love in the T-Mobile G1. Still a 3.2 megapixel camera, still a 3″ touchscreen and flippy-out QWERTY keyboard, still Wi-Fi and GPS, and still no video playback out of the box!

Optus Australia will start selling the device on four payment plans from 16 February 2009, whilst details regarding the Singtel launch are TBA.

Enjoy it, we have been!

Personalise Your T-Mobile G1’s Ringtones/Texts With Ringo!

picture-41There is now a free version of ringtone customisation software Ringo up on the Android Market. They intend to have a fully featured version to buy later on down the line, but they have a free one now for you to use!

This lets you set your ringtones and SMS alerts, and features a simple yet highly-functional interface much like the Windows Mobile and BlackBerry versions.

Ringo makes it simple to quickly change your phone’s tones, or set personal ring and SMS tones for your favorite contacts.

The next iterations for Ringo will add a bunch more features including MP3 support, whilst the latest one has exactly what I want – text message tones.

My ringtones? The new 24 FBI ringtone. It sounds completely different from the old one! As for texts, it is the pause music from Street Fighter 2 on the Super Nintendo. You had to be there in 1992 to find that sound therapeutic…

Check ‘em out on Ringomo.
