Use Your T-Mobile G1 As A Metal Detector!

Check your calendars, folks. This is not an April Fool’s hoax, the G1 metal detector app really works!

How the heck does it work? According to the smart bods (namely johnkzin) on the Android Guys post, “Could be the compass. Could also be that metal probably has an effect on the EM fields around the device, and thus affects signal strength/etc. of the GSM radio. Therefore, it may just be looking at fluctuations in the signal strength that are somehow easily relatable to proximity of metal interference.”

That was exactly what I was going to say. Awesome app, either way!

How To Reset Your T-Mobile G1 To Factory Settings!

Is your G1 playing up? Found mine becoming really laggy and quite annoying to use recently. Might be all that early Cupcake fiddling! Found that a good way to clear the cobwebs is just to restore the whole device to factory settings. Also good if returning it for any reason and you need to remove all traces of nefarious activity!

Here goes:

  1. Turn off the G1
  2. Press Home Key and End key at the same time for abuot 15 seconds, until you see a triangle with an exclamation point with a picture of the G1.
  3. Slide out the QWERTY keyboard and press Alt and W at the same time.
  4. That’s it! All done!

To do a soft reset, just press the Home and Back buttons when you see the triangle with an exclamation point and a picture of the G1 on the screen.

Thanks, Android Central!

T-Mobile G1 Vs. HTC Magic: A Video Comparison!

Lucky UK journos have been getting up close and personal with the HTC Magic today, and Zara of Shiny Shiny had her beautifully manicured hands on the Vodafone exclusive handset, comparing it to the T-Mobile G1!

Why am I not there? Good question. Think I’m having far more fun listening to Asher Roth (with his rude lyrics) and writing blog posts about arcade games! I think you’ll agree, I’m the real winner.

“Razor Ramon flow, oh so sharp, you can take Kapowski, I’ma take Lark on my Go-Kart.”

Extra, extra points for any Saved By The Bell reference.

T-Mobile To Bring Android 1.5/Cupcake To G1 In May!

Yes, we know that it was meant to come out many moons ago, but the recent official releases of the new Android 1.5 ‘Cupcake’ update means an ever-closer legitimate release.

Well, if T-Mobile are to believed this time, the G1 will be getting it’s official update in May!

Yes, all the whizzbangery of the HTC Magic with touch screen QWERTY and direct uploading of videos taken (yes, with the phone) to YouTube will soon come to the humble T-Mobile G1 in the very same month.

More good news to come from T-Mobile UK is an impressive 100,000 units sold in the first six months, making the G1 the network’s most successful handset! Great news, but as T3 remarks being a leader in a field of one is not that impressive…the real test will be when Vodafone’s Magic and (allegedly) O2’s Samsung’s i7500 are on the market!

Android App Brings Arcade Classics To Your T-Mobile G1!

Best. App. Ever.

Bringing gaming to your mobile is nothing new, there is an app currently available that allows the Samsung Omnia to play Playstation games, but this new one called Android Arcade for the G1 takes it to the next level!

The insanely expensive games on the Neo-Geo! Final Fight! Street Fighter! Metal Slug! Arcade classics, baby! Man, I remember a misspent youth dumping my pocket money in to some of those titles. To even fathom that they could now be played on a mobile phone boggles the mind!

Controls leave a bit to be desired, but enjoy all the greats on your mobile! As for where you get the legally suspect ROMs to emulate these games, you’re on your own…

T-Mobile G1 Sells A Million In The US!

ind-pic

IN YOUR FACE, G1 naysayers!

In spite of the percieved challenges against the iPhone and a saturated market, the T-Mobile G1 managed to move a million units since the launch way back in the tail end of 2008.

T-Mobile in the US, unlike the UK is a relative minnow in the mobile phone provider sea, with patchy 3G connctivity (remember how it rolled out) and nowhere near the clout of the Verizons of this world.

Some may be slamming Android as a ‘one phone pony,’ but judging by the profusion of manufacturers bringing their own Android phones in 2009 – Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola etc. – this pony must be a thoroughbred.

Congrats G1! Now let’s see what the other Android phones sell like in the coming months…
