T-Mobile G1 Paid Apps On UK Android Marketplace To Go Live On 12th March…Promise!

Sorry!

Yeah, I said paid apps were coming, then they didn’t. Sorry!

But when not trying to get some Michael Jackson tickets, the only thing I’ll be doing tomorrow is trying to get some decent paid apps for my T-Mobile G1, as the UK Android Marketplace finally goes live for them on the 12th of March.

According to Regan Whitehead from T-Mobile UK:

“From tomorrow, UK customers will have paid apps on the phone, and there’ll be a wide selection of paid apps on the market.”

Pretty clear cut there…

Maybe then you’ll be able to tell us which ones you’ve bought!

T-Mobile G1s In UK – Where’s Our Paid Apps?

rc9-version

Whilst the US has been enjoying their RC33 update on their T-Mobile G1s, the UK has been left paid app Marketplace-less…but not for much longer!

The German RC9 update has apparently been rolling out over the air, whilst the UK version is in testing according to modmyGphone.

Apologies, as I am forever changing my firmware myself (and risking ruin!), I was unaware that the rest of the UK was not enjoying the benefits of the new update.

Feeling brave and want to do manual updates? Check out this handy guide!

Browse Android Marketplace From Your PC With Cyrket!

picture-11

When not singlehandedly inventing and implementing an App Store before Apple on the iPhone with Cydia, the insanely talented developer Jay Freeman (who is known in CyberSpace as ’saurik’) has made a great way to explore the Android Marketplace from a computer with Cyrket.

AIsForAndroid

Cyrket not only allows you to see what’s new in every category, the ratings and prices of every single app, but even enables the use of QR codes! So using the barcode scanning Android app and pointing your phone’s camera at the squiggly square code off your monitor, it sends your G1 (or any Android phone for that matter) to the relevant page immediately!

Makes browsing the otherwise slightly cramped feeling Marketplace clear and breezy, thanks saurik!

Unlocked Developer Edition T-Mobile G1 IS Locked…From Paid Apps

Android Dev Phone 1

Remember that awesome decaled developer-spec T-Mobile G1 that Google was selling for $399?

Yeah, turns out it isn’t so awesome now that paid apps are available on the Android Marketplace. The free-wheeling nature of the Android Dev Phone 1 means that you would be easily able to roam around in the secret compartment where all the downloaded paid applications reside.

So if you were savvy enough to dip in there, fish out the app and ping it to your friends, then you end up in a crazy “free love and apps” world…and Google does not want that.

So for you, loyal fan of the G1 who shelled out the 400 bones, plus a $25 registration fee, there is no paid apps. Consider it a reward for your devotion and service. Come on, Google, surely we can reach some sort of solution that doesn’t involve shutting out the people you need most!
