T-Mobile To Bring Android 1.5/Cupcake To G1 In May!

Yes, we know that it was meant to come out many moons ago, but the recent official releases of the new Android 1.5 ‘Cupcake’ update means an ever-closer legitimate release.

Well, if T-Mobile are to believed this time, the G1 will be getting it’s official update in May!

Yes, all the whizzbangery of the HTC Magic with touch screen QWERTY and direct uploading of videos taken (yes, with the phone) to YouTube will soon come to the humble T-Mobile G1 in the very same month.

More good news to come from T-Mobile UK is an impressive 100,000 units sold in the first six months, making the G1 the network’s most successful handset! Great news, but as T3 remarks being a leader in a field of one is not that impressive…the real test will be when Vodafone’s Magic and (allegedly) O2’s Samsung’s i7500 are on the market!

Great Scott! It works! I tried it, and it works! Not the hobbled versions, the real deal with Android Market, Google Apps and everything!

Go here, and then do this!

How to Install:
1. Gain root (follow the various threads available on the forums to accomplish this).
2. Download the latest build above.
3. Copy to your sdcard as update.zip
4. Power off your phone.
5. Hold the Home button, and power on the device. (This should send you into recovery mode).
6. Press ALT+B to create a nandroid backup (if you wish to fall back without losing any data later, if you do go back to RC33 [or any other firmware 1.0 update] you will need to reflash your radio, users have reported problems using the new radio on the old firmwares.)
7. Press ALT+W, then ALT+S.
8. Wait for it to finish, then home+back.

Android 1.5/Cupcake Announced, SDK Available Now!

cupcakeA glimmer of hope for Cupcake devotees out there, as the latest update from Google has been announced with a quick look for developers to get their hands on it too!

Android 1.5 shows a few of the things that Cupcake will be bringing to our G1s in the coming weeks(?), with features including APIs for virtual keyboards, integrated home screen widgets, live folders, and speech recognition.

The final builds are some ways off, but to have an idea of what’s coming in Android 1.5 and an insight to exactly how 3rd party app developers can make the most of Cupcake is exciting news.

Cupcake fans, they have not forgotten us!

Video: T-Mobile G1/Android Cupcake Features Showcase

Seems like we’re not getting Cupcake next month, then.

Whilst we wait for Google to put us out of our misery, a kindly Developer allows us a glimpse behind the veil to see what Cupcake actually has going on.

The virtual keyboard is awesome, the video recording is…there (iPhone 3.0? I think not.) and the globe shows that the G1 is no slouch when it comes to 3D.

It looks stable enough to us. Oh Google, won’t you allow us to have a taste?

Cupcake Is Back On T-Mobile G1, Due For April Release!

42-15660639

Bless you T-Mobile! According to Pocket-Lint, the Cupcake update is back in action, and being prepped for an April release on the T-Mobile G1!

This means the video playback, virtual keyboard, voice recorder, and stereo Bluetooth changes to the Android operating system we’ve been promised may finally be on its way! Check this post to see all the Cupcake goodness that is said to be contained…

“We will be offering G1 users the firmware update sometime in April”, a spokesperson for T-Mobile told Pocket-lint.

“We can’t say whether this will be connected with the launch of the HTC Magic as we aren’t aware of what alternations if any they are making to the operating system”.

With the HTC Magic also out in April, is that a coincidence or is the Cupcake update going to be out on both at the same time? Hmm…let’s hope it isn’t an April Fool!

Android Cupcake – YouTube Favourites

htc-magic1

The drip drip of information regarding the Cupcake is rather like Chinese water torture or sadistic foreplay. We can’t show you everything but take a peek at this. So it is, that today there is another tantalising glance of Cupcake. Mobile Crunch spotted a YouTube Favourites folder on the HTC Magic. Access your favourite YouTube videos from the home screen fantastic, excellent means I can listen to Flock of Seagulls I Ran, without all that tedious typing into YouTube’s search bar.

T-Mobile Tries To Appease Cupcake Fans With RC33 Update

extra

Whilst January came and went with nary a Cupcake-related peep from T-Mobile, it seems like they do have something in the works to keep G1 fans quiet for the meantime in the form of an entirely different update!

“To ensure a great experience with the T-Mobile G1 with Google, customers with these devices will receive an Over the Air (OTA) update to their devices between February 5 and February 15. This OTA will include new system enhancements such as the ability to save pictures or files to file by long-pressing an item, check for system updates, and use the Google Voice Search feature. The OTA will also fix a number of known issues. New G1 activations will receive the OTA up to three days after service has been activated.”

Hey! Google Voice Search! Not quite virtual G1 keyboard, but it’ll do for now?
