Sciphone Dream G2 Video Shows Off Faux Android Interface…

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, this is still Sciphone straight jacking Android. Did no-one tell them that Google’s platform was open source, freely available to use on their Dream G2 handset…for free? All that effort, all that reverse engineering, for nought!

Sad.

Anyway, the phone doesn’t look half bad.

It looks all bad.

Will HTC’s G1 Android Phone Ever See An India Release Date?

n509911928_1966604_6847-1

Having been to India myself lately, one thing they are not playing around with is mobile phones. With movie megastar Aamit Khan plugging the Samsung Omnia and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 being plastered all over Mumbai International Airport, their mobile phone industry has expanded far beyond clockwork Nokias with monochrome screens in the East…for the rich.

With smartphones priced way out of reach of many in India, industry commentators were looking to see a version of the Android-powered HTC Dream phone being released in this territory late in 2008 as an entry level alternative.  Well, we are now into 2009, and still no nearer to seeing the G1 having a concrete release date over there.

Reports say HTC are in advanced talks with a leading service provider and would prefer to introduce the HTC G1 Android phone in India through a close association with a single network, as they have done with T-Mobile in the US and Europe.

The HTC G1 Android phone is rumoured to be released at a cost of over 20,000 Rupees, far higher than the launch price overseas, but lower than astronomical 31,000 Rupees (£420!) they are charging for an 8GB Apple iPhone.

Perhaps there will be a cheap and cheerful resolution to the Android smartphone stalemate in India in the form of the Kogan Pro…we’ll wait and see.

Oh, the picture? That’s me (on the left) touching an elephant in Kerala. Any other questions? Didn’t think so.

No Disassemble Johnny 5 T-Mobile G1! Oh, Go On Then.

g1-service-manual

If you were one of those ‘odd’ kids in the playground that was into pulling the wings of flies and dissecting frogs, you are in for a technological treat!

The original HTC Dream Service Manual is available to download here, and is filled with gems like:

1. Remove the tape and disconnect Qwerty key
FPC
2. Disconnect the daughter board FPC connector
3. Unlock the camera connector

Stop. You are breaking your phone. Do not do this. Unless you want to weep openly at the loss of a beautful Android machine.

Successor To T-Mobile G1 Revealed (Kind Of)! It’s Weird!

With the T-Mobile G1 out and the Android SDK free for any enterprising developer to take advantage of, it comes as little surprise that the first new handset to run the operating system is from China, and is also cunningly named to take advantage of all blogosphere and internet hype…ever.

The SciPhone Dream G2 (real name) promises to be the most photo-friendly phone ever, and the long list of specs reveals some interesting choices beyond Android.

With neither a virtual touchscreen keyboard nor one of the physical variety, it seems like the G2 will actually harness the power of dreams to create texts and e-mail, or could go back to the T9 predictive text days on the screen.

Either way, unless you find yourself haggling in a market in downtown Qinghai for the G2 and a Coke Phone, you are unlikely to ever see this curio again. And is that really a bad thing?
